How to eat healthier

Heathier diets are often difficult to achieve, given that there are so many constraints, health tips and nutritional advice out there. If we can just make one change and we are eating healthier instantly, that would be a great thought. But, where do we begin?

Start by considering what food item you eat in the highest proportion and how you can make that item healthier. That, to us, would be the easiest way toward a journey of healthier eating. In an Asian country like Singapore, we enjoy and consume large amounts of rice every day, especially white rice, as it is one of the best accompaniments to dishes. 

However, in a study published in the British Medical Journal in March, 2012, it was mentioned that high glycemic index (GI) foods like white rice can cause spikes in blood sugar. Previous research has linked high glycemic index foods with increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Why white rice is not considered “healthy”

Brown rice is packed with nutrients and fibre as its fibre-rich bran and nutrient-packed germ are kept intact as an entire rice grain.

On the other hand, white rice is processed to have its bran and germ removed for longer shelf life as well as to achieve a softer and “preferred” taste and texture. As a result, white rice loses most of its nutrients and fibre-content.

Thus, white rice is often referred to as ’empty carbs’ with its lack of nutrients and significantly higher glycemic index (GI) since digestion of white rice converts into sugar more quickly in the body.

How then can we make white rice healthier? 

Since we consume so much rice and enjoy rice as a culture, making rice healthier would make a whole world of difference to our health.
